VS Apartment
The original floor plan for this apartment, located in a squat building in Ipanema, posed great difficulties for the implementation of the brief. The space had a spectacular view, taking in the peninsula of Arpoador and the Dois Irmãos mountain, but was extremely structurally complex and had a tapering format. Several studies were carried out in order to position most of the rooms so they face the view, to guarantee fluid circulation, and to ensure privacy for the home’s more intimate areas.
With this in mind, the kitchen was shifted to the center of the floor plan, allowing the master suite to face the beach. Social areas were interlinked, framed by a long façade that reveals the sea and is mirrored by a long bench running along the parapet. Farther back, two guest suites open up onto a common living room, seeking to lend breadth to the most tucked-away spaces in the apartment.
Preexisting concrete structures, arranged in a somewhat random fashion, were conceived as protagonists in the design. Neutral materials, from the limestone floors to the off-white walls and woodworking, plus the sober palette of the upholstery, drew the colors of the sky, the sea, and the sand inside the space, with interior reflecting exterior.
