Pelourinho

The main issue at hand in the rehabilitation of the public spaces in the neighborhood of Pelourinho, now frequented almost exclusively by tourists, was to bring city residents back to daily life in the area. We considered the factors that set off the downslide of that part of Bahia’s capital: a historical site of unquestionable importance, but since transformed into a picturesque backdrop for sporadic events.

The open call was meant to cover three largos, or plazas, and the initial idea was to engage the spaces jointly, seeking to create a unified initiative that might benefit Pelourinho as a whole. While complementing one another, each of the squares takes on its own purpose and personality, the aim being to bring out the dynamic possibilities of the spaces through their different uses and functions.
