In Brazil’s pavilion at Expo 2015, we sought to present the defining characteristics and language of the Studio throughout the design, establishing a coherent statement across multiple levels, as we do with our other projects. The chairs were developed in partnership with the Italian brand Poliform, bringing the excellence of Italian manufacturing to the final product and deepening collaboration between the two countries.
With a circular seat and two subtly curved legs that stretch upward to form the back, the Maria Bonita is designed to provide maximum comfort in a light, familiar-looking ensemble. Inspired by the plurality of the Brazilian experience, the simplicity of its shapes belies intense research into materials and solutions, including options in wood, straw, leather, vegetable fibers, and aluminum. The final result: eight combinations, each with its own personality.
Establishing both continuity and dialogue with the Maria Bonita, the Lampião chair—a more robust structure, with a larger seat and supporting arms—was conceived for the pavilion’s restaurant. The single band of leather that forms the back and arms of the chair, tracing the upper edge of the piece, recalls the iconic hats of the back country cangaceiros and blurs notions of upholstery and structure.
